Do OWIs negatively affect a real estate broker’s business?

In business, your reputation is everything. Having a great reputation for providing quality service, offering honest, reliable products or services and having integrity are values that many customers place above the cost of services. As a matter of fact, many customers will shop with companies and make purchases that are more expensive than the ones that competitors offer if they feel that they can trust the company that they are doing business with.

But, what happens when the company has a good reputation, but the reputation of the manager or owner begins to crack?

For example, let’s say that you are looking for a good Real Estate Broker to handle your real estate needs. You are looking for a company that prides itself on providing clients reliable, affordable real estate services at an affordable price. And, during your internet research, you discover that one of your top choice real estate broker choices has been arrested for OWI not once, but several times. You begin to wonder whether or not this person has the integrity and commitment necessary to being able to run a business that places emphasis on customer satisfaction.

The short answer is it depends. The real estate broker in question may be the perfect choice for your needs, but there is the lingering possibility that the issues with substance abuse that you uncovered during your research may run over into their business dealings, leading you to wonder whether or not you are in a position to take that chance. Of course, the arrests may not have had anything to do with alcohol consumption at all, after all OWI doesn’t necessarily mean drunk driving. However, that is the most common reason for this charge.
